Today we visited Magnolia BBQ and Fish, located in the Historic 4th Avenue Civil Rights district of downtown Birmingham. Magnolia opened in 2009 by 2 brothers, Tyrone Cook and Dameione Rogers. We were welcomed by the Executive Chef and Owner, Dameione Rogers, and immediately treated like family. Let me tell you dear readers, Magnolia served us up some ribs that are by far the best we have had in Alabama. Heart healthy portions left us full, yet wanting more. His secret recipe was passed down from his Grandmother. All we can tell you is that he marinades the ribs overnight, cooks them slow over hickory, and lets the meat rest for 2 hours till they’re perfect. These ribs are succulent, tender, melt in your mouth with a sauce that is both sweet and spicy. Aside from having the best ribs we’ve ever tasted, Magnolia offers up world class baked beans, peach cobbler and banana pudding. Dameione states, “We keep the menu small and specialize in things we do best”. This is the most humble thing we have ever heard!
Magnolia’s holds to it’s family-oriented style of business even in the service. The staff is courteous, professional fun and friendly. The place is quaint and small with artist renderings of famous entertainers and athletes adorning the beautiful red walls. They offer counter style seating which adds to the Southern Charm and a view of the staff preparing food from the massive brick oven teases one with the room filling aroma of BBQ.
Not only does Dameione provide Alabama with the best ribs, he also gives back to the community. He participates in the: free lunch for Foot Soldiers Youth Day Camp, Block Party 4th Ave Downtown Birmingham and mentors young aspiring entrepreneurs. He has won several awards for his outstanding BBQ including:
