Winter Birmingham Restaurant Week is coming!

From upscale American Nouveau to Vietnamese, participating restaurants include: 5 Point Public House, Bottega Café, Bottega Dining Room, Cantina, Cashio’s Meatball Market, East 59, Firebirds, Grille 29, Hattie B’s, Hot Tag Food Truck, Iron City, John’s City Diner, JoJo’s on Broadway, Little Savannah, Michael’s Steakhouse, Ocean, Oscar’s at the Museum, OvenBird, Perry’s Steakhouse, Pho Pho Vietnamese & Sushi Bar, Pies & Pints, Post Office Pies, Rojo, Rusty’s BBQ, Saigon Noodle House, Silvertron Café, Sky Castle, Slice, Taco Morro Loco, The Gardens Café, Tropicaleo, Vino, Wine Loft, Urban Cookhouse – The Summit and Vecchia Pizzeria & Mercato.

How did BRW come about? James Little, Founder of BRW, shared his vision with us, “In the spring of 2009, I returned from Atlanta visiting friends and enthusiastically shared my dining experiences during Downtown Atlanta Restaurant Week 2009 with Style Advertising who I was working with, in Five Points South at the time. I was impressed how easy it was for foodies to go out during Atlanta’s RW, felt that Birmingham’s food was just as good as Atlanta’s and a program like this was needed to promote and highlights Birmingham’s growing culinary community”.

James was right! A very exciting time for Birmingham’s culinary and economic scene. For the first time, Birmingham “America’s No. 1 Next Hot Food City” according to Zagat, and recently, No. 14 on Zagat’s list of “The Hottest Food Cities of 2016.”

In addition to this special week, BRW also brings to Bham:

*Beer Saturdays to be held both Saturdays of WRW on Jan. 21 and 28 from noon to 2 p.m. Attendees will meet Birmingham’s newest brewery, Ghost Train

*“Free Food Friday” contest on Facebook, allowing lucky Facebook fans to receive gift certificates to a BRW participating

*Uncorked, a stock-the-cellar wine tasting event at Hop City featuring Deutsch family wines. This event, to be held Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., is free to the public.

Special thanks to James Little, Audrey Pannell, Bryana Reid for their input and for all that you do for Bham’s culinary, cultural and economic development.

Magnolia BBQ and Fish….Yummmm

magnoliaToday we visited Magnolia BBQ and Fish, located in the Historic 4th Avenue Civil Rights district of downtown Birmingham. Magnolia opened in 2009 by 2 brothers, Tyrone Cook and Dameione Rogers. We were welcomed by the Executive Chef and Owner, Dameione Rogers, and immediately treated like family. Let me tell you dear readers, Magnolia served us up some ribs that are by far the best we have had in Alabama. Heart healthy portions left us full, yet wanting more. His secret recipe was passed down from his Grandmother. All we can tell you is that he marinades the ribs overnight, cooks them slow over hickory, and lets the meat rest for 2 hours till they’re perfect. These ribs are succulent, tender, melt in your mouth with a sauce that is both sweet and spicy. Aside from having the best ribs we’ve ever tasted, Magnolia offers up world class baked beans, peach cobbler and banana pudding. Dameione states, “We keep the menu small and specialize in things we do best”. This is the most humble thing we have ever heard!

Magnolia’s holds to it’s family-oriented style of business even in the service. The staff is courteous, professional fun and friendly. The place is quaint and small with artist renderings of famous entertainers and athletes adorning the beautiful red walls. They offer counter style seating which adds to the Southern Charm and a view of the staff preparing food from the massive brick oven teases one with the room filling aroma of BBQ.

magsauceNot only does Dameione provide Alabama with the best ribs, he also gives back to the community. He participates in the: free lunch for Foot Soldiers Youth Day Camp, Block Party 4th Ave Downtown Birmingham and mentors young aspiring entrepreneurs. He has won several awards for his outstanding BBQ including:

#1 Steve Harvey Best BBQ in the Nation (2015),

#1 Best BBQ Sauce by Habitats for Humanity (2015),

#1 Best BBQ by The Jones Valley Sentinel (2015), and

Top Rated Restaurant by Yelp (2016).

Vecchia Pizzeria & Mercato…Yummmm

Dear Readers,

We are very sorry for the delay in the start of this blog. Our staff has been debating exactly how to handle a comprehensive system of rating the dining, drinking, and entertainment venues of Alabama. You are quite unique in the United States and your charms are in a category of their own.

We are attempting to create several exciting aspects of Alabama dining and Entertainment within our blog. We plan to bring you interviews with chefs, bartenders, and owners. We will be reviewing all that is happening in Alabama so you can make the biggest and best bang for your buck. In the future we will be hosting live events to showcase some of Alabama’s treasures.

Our first review is on a wonderful pizzeria and restaurant hidden in the Preserve of Hoover. Vecchia  Pizzeria and Mercato claims to be passionate about pizza and they do not fall short.

Vecchia produces a collection of artisan pizzas that you would be hard pressed to find on this side of Rome. The ingredients quality is second to none. Vecchia uses authentic hand made Italian wood burning ovens created from soil at Mount Vesuvius. Every level of care has been considered to bring you as fine a pizza as you can find.

Bernard Tamburello, the owner, takes great pride in offering you a meal like none other Vecchia.PNGavailable in Alabama.

The ambiance is family oriented. Long tables and benches ensure a casual and welcoming dining experience . There is patio seating available and outdoors is pet friendly.

Craft beers and selected wines will add to your experience. Vecchia does it right.

Tip: Try anything on the menu, you will not be disappointed. I love the giardino pizza and my wife loves the arrabbiata pizza and their lasagna. The desserts we recommend are the White Chocolate Bread cake and the Italian Cream cake. Don’t forget a salad….the dressings are to die for. Want to purchase their sauces, dressings and sausage? They have a market of all food products from Italy!

And if the food wasn’t enough, they offer weekly specials (kids eat free Tuesdays, Wine Wednesdays) and live entertainment on the weekends. Check out:
